Spanning 5 decades of dance

The National College of Dance (NCD) marks a significant milestone this year as it celebrates its 50th anniversary since its inception by the founder Marie Walton Mahon. What began as a dream has now evolved into an institution renowned for its excellence in dance education, formally under the stewardship of Michele and Tony Bayliss, and since 2014, the esteemed Artistic Director Brett Morgan OAM.

In 2016, a pivotal moment occurred as the junior school transitioned from the Marie Walton Mahon Dance Academy to the National College of Dance Junior Academy. This transformation opened doors for the wider dance community to access the exceptional faculty and resources that NCD offers.

NCD prides itself on its inclusive approach to dance education, catering to students as young as 12 months old. With a specialized department dedicated to Tiny Tots, the college nurtures budding talents from their earliest steps, fostering a love for dance that can last a lifetime.

From those who dance purely for enjoyment to aspiring professionals, NCD provides training at all levels. Their programs are designed to guide, support, and inspire dancers on their unique journeys. Transition programs from part-time to full-time dance, associate programs, and nationally recognized full-time programs through their Registered Training Organization offer a pathway for growth and development.

In addition to its focus on nurturing young talent, NCD recognizes the importance of lifelong learning and offers specialised Adult Ballet classes. These classes provide a space for adults to continue their dance journey, whether they are returning to the art form after a hiatus or discovering it for the first time.

In July 2024, the National College of Dance (NCD) will be rolling out the red carpet to welcome back past families and students as part of their grand celebration marking 50 years of excellence. This special event will serve as a reunion for those who have been part of the NCD journey over the decades, offering an opportunity to reminisce, reconnect, and celebrate the lasting impact of the college.

As part of the festivities, NCD is extending an invitation to past members to join their dedicated “Celebrating 50 years – MWM/NCD” Facebook group. This online community will serve as a virtual hub for sharing memories, stories, and updates leading up to the anniversary. It’s a chance for alumni, former staff, and supporters to come together, share their experiences, and be part of the milestone celebration.

The culmination of the anniversary year will be a spectacular Celebratory Gala at the end of the year. This gala promises to be a dazzling showcase of talent, featuring performances by current students, special guest appearances, and perhaps even some surprises to honour the legacy of NCD.
